Standards & Methodology

Every emission factor in Scope3 is traceable to official government sources. Here's how we ensure accuracy and auditability.

GHG Protocol Compliant

All 15 Scope 3 categories follow the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain Standard.

Official Sources Only

We use government-published emission factors, updated annually with each official release.

Audit-Ready

Every factor includes source references for full traceability during audits.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

DESNZ 2025 Conversion Factors

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero publishes annual greenhouse gas conversion factors. We use both activity-based factors (kWh, km, kg) and well-to-tank (WTT) factors for upstream emissions.

DEFRA Carbon Footprint Factors (Spend-Based)

For spend-based calculations where activity data isn't available, we use DEFRA's kgCO2e per £ factors organised by SIC industry codes. Ideal for estimating purchased goods and services.

🇦🇺 Australia

National Greenhouse Accounts Factors 2025

Published by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). These are the official emission factors for Australian carbon reporting, including state-specific electricity grid factors. Where DCCEEW factors are not available, we use UK DESNZ and DEFRA factors as fallbacks, in line with DCCEEW guidance.

Our Methodology

Factor Traceability

Every emission factor in our database includes a source comment referencing the exact spreadsheet, sheet name, and row number from the official publication. This enables auditors to verify any value.

Annual Updates When Available

We update our factors when governments release new versions. Assessments retain the factors used at the time of calculation for historical accuracy.

Estimates Only When Permitted

We only use estimates or alternative sources when explicitly permitted by GHG Protocol, DEFRA, or other official guidance. When we do, we clearly mark it and document the methodology.
